Microsoftissued its first patch for the just-released Windows 7 beta on Tuesday, but it passed on plugging a hole in an important file-sharing protocol that it fixed in older versions of the operating system.

Earlier on January 13, 2009, Windows Update, Microsoft's primary update service, began delivering the first patch to Windows 7 since the company struggled to launch the public beta last Friday. The update fixes a flaw that shaves several seconds of audio from any MP3 file that's edited, including files modified automatically as users connect to the Internet.

"Without action on your part, all MP3 files that have large headers in your Windows Media Player and Windows Media Center libraries are likely to lose some audio," Microsoft said in the support document it published Saturday, several days after it first posted the fix to its MSND and TechNet subscription services.

Before Tuesday, users who wanted to apply the fix had to find it, download it manually and install it themselves.

Microsoft also recommended that users back up all MP3 files before doing an upgrade to Windows 7 from Windows Vista, and that they set all of them to "read-only" status by right-clicking each file in Windows Explorer and then clicking the General tab and selecting the "Read-only" box. Failing that, users should disable metadata automatic updates in Windows Media Player, Microsoft said.

At the same time, it quashed the MP3 bug, however, Microsoft ignored a vulnerability in the Server Message Block (SMB) protocol that affects every version of Windows, including Windows 7.

Microsoft explained why the flaw went unfixed. "We provide security updates for beta versions of Windows through Windows Update for Critical issues only," said Christopher Budd, a spokesman for the Microsoft Security Response Center (MSRC), in a post to the group's blog Tuesday. "So the vulnerability will be addressed in the next public release for Windows 7."

Of the three bugs patched by the MS09-001 security update today, just one is pertinent to Windows 7, Budd added. That vulnerability, designated as CVE-2008-4114, is a denial-of-service bug rated "moderate," the second step in Microsoft's four-level scoring system.

The remaining two vulnerabilities -- both labeled "critical" by Microsoft -- affect Windows 2000, XP and Server 2003; one of them also affects Windows Vista and Server 2008.

Windows 7 beta, which was released Saturday, will be available for download through at least Jan. 24.

Dealing with computer virus

A computer virus is a computer program that can copy itself and infect a computer without the permission or knowledge of the user. The term "virus" is also commonly but erroneously used to refer to other types of malware, adware and spyware programs that do not have the reproductive ability. I think all of you know about that, so this is some way to avoid the virus infected computer:
1. Use Antivirus that you believe with always update, regardless of any kind is always provided in the update, and automatically switched protection
2. Always scan all external storage media that will be in use, this may be making a bit but if you Autoprotect anti-virus work then the procedure can be missed
3. If you connect directly to the Internet to try to combine with your Antivirus Firewalls, Anti spamming, etc.

If your computer has been infected with the virus, then do :
1. Detection and determine where some of the virus. whether the floppy disks, network, email? etc., if you are connected to the network then it's good you isolate your first computer (either with cable release or disable the connection)
2. Identification and classifying the type of virus that attacks your computer, the following manner:
- Symptoms that arise, for example: the message, the file is missing or corrupt etc.
- Scan with your antivirus, if you are exposed to when running Autoprotectvius in the definition means that you do not have a computer virus this data, try to manually update or to download a virus definitionnya you install. If the virus to block efforts to update then, strived to use other media (computer) with antivirus update.
3. Clean, after you successfully detect it and then try to seek immediate removal or how to destroy the sites that provide information of the virus. This latest update antivirus if you do not succeed destroy it.
4. The worst, if not all of the above is successfully re-format your computer.

By contrast to all that fiddling about with CPUs, 3D card overclocking is incredibly simple. It's all done from within Windows, with no rebooting required, and in Vista you'll even find that the system will recover from an unsuccessful overclock without locking up or bluescreening.

For an NVIDIA board, you want an app called nTune. It's an official NVIDIA tool - grab it from nvidia.com/object/sysutility.html. Then you just need to head over to the NVIDIA Control Panel (there should be an option for it, if you right-click on your desktop) and click on 'adjust GPU settings' under 'Performance'. If you select 'Custom clock frequencies' you can alter the core bus and the memory bus. As always, do it by tiny increments (10MHz or so) to identify the exact speed ceiling. There's an option in the NV control panel called 'system stability', and there you can run a looped render test to check the card can cope with the speed hike.

ATI cards are similarly straightforward. Load up Cataylst Control Center, again by right-clicking on the desktop and selecting its name. When prompted, choose ‘Advanced’ rather than the 'Basic' mode. From the list of settings on the left, you want the bottom one - ATI Overdrive. The best option whether you're a first or a fourtieth timer at this is to click 'Run automated clock configuration utility.' This will test the card's GPU and RAM at various different speeds, working out what's safe to run at. It'll take a little while, but once done you should notice that Overdrive's added a few extra MHz. Click ‘Apply’, then gun up a few games and give them a quick run.

From : DAEMON Tools

DAEMON Tools is an advanced application for multiprotection emulation. DAEMON Tools is further development of the Generic Safedisc emulator incorporating all its features. This program allows running backup copies of SafeDisc (C-Dilla), Securom or Laserlock protected games. It emulates max. 4 DVD-ROM drives and works with CD/DVD images created by many burning programs DAEMON Tools works under Windows9x/ME/NT/2000/XP with all types of CD/DVDROM drives (IDE/SCSI) and supports nearly any CD protection.
  • DAEMON Tools needs a 1:1 Copy to run!!
  • DAEMON Tools is used to RUN GAMES, NOT TO BURN THEM!!! Means emulation must be active while you want to play a game, not while burning the copy (except for you want to use DAEMON Tools' "fastdump" feature on a safedisc protected CD).
  • If you want to run a copy protected application from an image mounted to a Generic DVD-ROM enabling the copy protection emulation(s) is NOT necessary!!
  • Generic DVD-ROM is able to run nearly every protected or unprotected CD image (Safedisc, Securom, Laserlock, Lockblocks etc.) like it was the original CD! Just do an image file using one of the supported burning programs and mount it with Daemon Manager!

DAEMON Tools supports the following image files:
- cue/bin
- iso
- ccd (CloneCD)
- bwt (Blindwrite)
- mds (Media Descriptor File)
- cdi (Discjuggler)
- nrg (Nero)
- pdi (Instant CD/DVD)

According to this blog, PCs with Windows 7 Beta installed will not be able to run McAfee Total Protection or McAfee Antivirus... at least not at the moment. While the blog entry gave no specifics, the McAfee installer pops up with a warning, saying that the program does not support "the version of Windows installed on this machine." The installer then promptly refers the installer to the product documentation for a list of supported operating systems.

After a difficult launch, Microsoft was able to patch its download servers and offer the Windows 7 beta by Saturday afternoon after consumers overloaded the Microsoft pipelines. While no immediate complaints have popped up other than the McAfee installation problem, Windows 7 has already racked in mixed reviews, some claiming that the operating system is nothing more than a glorified service pack of the blandly-received Windows Vista, while others believe that Windows 7 is the operating system that Vista meant to be (but fell short).

Still, users of Internet Explorer 8 beta - now integrated into Windows 7 beta - should have seen the compatibility issue coming in regards to McAfee, as the antivirus program is one of many not working in harmony with Microsoft's latest browser. Strangely enough, and as pointed out by the blog, McAfee's browser-based Site Advisor Plus actually does work with both Windows 7 beta and Internet Explorer 8 Beta.

Hopefully, Microsoft and McAfee can iron out the incompatibility bugs before the Windows 7 Beta expires on August 1. Original Posting
